Counsellor– Family Preservation & Family Support Programs

In our Family Preservation program, you will be working with MCFD to identify counselling goals and objectives with the various family members and work with them individually or in groups as appropriate.  You will provide initial and on-going assessments as well as work with client families regarding issues of family boundaries, improving parental capacity, reducing risk to children, developing problem-solving skills, supporting the reduction of relationship violence, increasing knowledge on the impact of family violence, responding to mental health and addictions, building resilience, and establishing family and community support networks, etc.  You will attend to legal and ethical issues as they may arise, and in consultation with the supervisor, ensure that appropriate action is taken.

While working in the Family Support Program, you will be responsible for providing services to clients referred through a variety of paths, including, MCFD, self-referral, school counsellors, family doctors and other community resources.  Many of the families may already be connected to the Agency through other programs.  You will provide education on parenting, coping and other skills as well as provide concrete resourcing and referrals regarding housing, childcare, and access to government, legal systems, and community services.

You may also provide counselling services in other Agency clinical programs as requested.

This position requires some flexibility in work hours and a capacity to respond to a diversity of client needs.  The hours of service must be flexible to accommodate the schedules of families and will include after-school and evening hours.  As Family Preservation & Family Support work is done primarily out in the community, this position requires the use of a personal automobile.  You will be provided with an Agency cell phone and laptop for work purposes. 

The Agency is using a hybrid work model where you will work in the community, in the Agency’s office and from your own home office.  Services will be provided in person, virtually and over the phone. 

This position is a .6-1.0 FTE position (21-35 hours per week) based on candidate preference.

Senior Administrative Assistant – Community & Provincial Programs

You will provide administrative support to the Director of Community Programs.  You will update and manage program registration processes.  You will enter client information and other relevant data into the Agency’s Nucleus Labs database.  You will collect and collate program utilization, demographic and client outcome data.  You will set up meetings, take minutes and prepare reports.  You will maintain the grant calendar for Community programs and assist with grant applications and reports.  You will work with the communications team to create and revise program forms, posters, brochures etc following branding guidelines.

You will provide helpful and pro-active support to the Director of Community & Provincial Programs and work closely with her to ensure the smooth operations of the Community and Provincial programs. 

You will also provide back-up reception duties. You will cover lunch and breaks for the regular receptionist as well as vacation and sick coverage as necessary. 

This position is full time, 35 hours per week.

Clinical Counselling Graduate Internship

At Family Services of the North Shore, we offer a comprehensive internship program for Master’s-level counselling and social work students who need to complete their practicum and professional registration requirements.

Our 10-month program provides interns the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience within a community-based counselling agency, while enabling the Agency to continue its tradition of providing in-depth, affordable counselling services to North Shore residents.

Under the guidance of an individual staff supervisor, each intern is fully involved in all aspects of the counselling process and may work with individual adults and/or children and assist in group facilitation.

    • Over 10,400 individuals
    • Close to 3,000 children

We provide more than 11,300 hours of counselling (including low- and no-fee services). Our volunteers also provide nearly 10,000 hours of service.
